"Spirituality is not adopting more beliefs and assumptions, but uncovering the best in you." ~ Amit Ray

Unearthing your “spiritual side” is akin to knowing and accepting your whole being, inside and out, separate from the material world. Our spirituality allows us to go beyond the normal senses (touch, smell, etc.) and reconnect with our inner teacher--our soul. In a World with many stigmas, dogmas, norms, etc., it can be easy to lose sight of our true selves as we strive to fit in. Awakening to your spirituality helps to eliminate beliefs, behaviors, and patterns that do not serve you so that you can live a life true to your soul's values.

Everyone experiences their first glimpses of a spiritual awakening differently. Though you'll find many methods and suggestions, nobody can really teach you to be spiritual; the process is natural and is often spurred by a longing to change something - whether about yourself or your circumstances. Just like the shadow side, we all have a divine essence within us waiting to be discovered and enhanced. The path is yours to uncover and decode.

You may have heard of different ascension stories by now. Sometimes it is expressed as a deep desire or calling to be of service while other times it can be more sudden and life changing like after a near-death experience or unknowingly being in the ‘dark night of the soul’ phase. No matter how it manifests, and if you choose to go with it instead of resisting, the process will be enlightening and relieving as you begin to step into your true nature.

By deeply embracing our soul's true identity, we can step into our light and purpose. Have you ever considered that the reason one becomes a nurse, for example, is because of an untapped healing ability? Or perhaps you or someone you know says “I sense that…” or “I feel…” a lot; imagine what could be revealed if you learned about claircognizance...

Awakening to spirituality isn’t limited to psychics, shamans, or yogis! It means you are becoming conscious and connected to your higher self and all that is. Nor does spirituality have anything to do with religion, though the two are commonly linked. As quoted by Anthony D. Williams: “Spirituality does not come from religion. It comes from our soul.” You don't have to belong to a religion to know of and connect with a higher presence or sense that your ancestors and guides are always with you!

Since you too have likely felt the shift, I’m sure you’ve searched many websites or blogs about the spiritual awakening process and the 101 signs that you are experiencing one. But if not, then I encourage you to do so if you feel inclined. It is important to note that while the information digested from my site and that of others is helpful, each path is personal. You will have many experiences and teachers but ultimately it is up to you to discern the truth from that which is YOUR truth.

Curb your ego during a spiritual awakening

One of the first steps to getting closer to that truth is to stop identifying with and acting from the comfort of the part of the ego I call our ‘fabricated identity’. How? Here are a few tips that may help on the journey to your natural self:

1. Journaling and Reflecting

The best way that we can understand ourselves is to express ourselves without judgment. When you write out your thoughts, feelings, and observations in the heat of a moment, you may unconsciously be channeling something deeper. Make it a point to re-read your journal entries with a cool head and reflect on that moment. Notice what new perspectives and feelings come to mind. Don’t be surprised if you laugh it off. If you do, then take it as a sign that in that moment, you were probably acting from shadow vibes. You can only correct what you know!

2. Define your Own Values and Codes

If someone had a bad experience with your favorite barber, would you stop seeing them?

Has someone told you to focus on one thing when you have so many great ideas?

Are you tired of living by other people’s rules? Maybe you agree with some but not all. Wouldn’t you agree that you know what’s best for you? Great! Then do what YOU feel is best for YOU. The best part of life is all its lessons. Don’t worry about being right or wrong, know that Spirit has your back and that you will always be guided back on the right track. That doesn’t mean to break the laws 😊, simply live your life for you and never ignore a hunch!

3. Do What Makes your Heart Sing

Connecting with your soul is all about connecting with your heart! When one is so caught up in being accepted, they can neglect to satisfy their own desires. Helen Keller once said, “The only thing worse than being blind is having sight, but no vision”. Don’t get stuck believing that someone else’s desires are yours.

You’ve taken care of your to-do list at work, but what personal goals have you set?

Your dad wants you to take over the family business, but what do you want?

4. Disconnect and Introspect

Take walks, meditate, practice breath-work – these are just a few mindful (yet mindless) activities to help you tune in be in the Now.

Others include yoga, tai chi, a few minutes of silence, dancing, reading, and more. If you can’t get outside in nature, then view scenic photos or videos with soothing sounds/music. The idea is to get out of your head, let go of thoughts, and be present in the moment.

5. RELAX and Spend Time Alone

Our ego is what drives us to do, while our spirit reminds us to simply BE.

Take your focus from time, money, friends, achievement, etc. and apply it to listening to your higher self. Society has trained humans to be busy and that being tired is a sign of laziness or weakness. The more time you spend connecting with your own being, the more aware you will be of your body’s rhythm and cycles. What if your lethargy is Spirit trying to tell you that there is a better way?

6. Be of Service to Others without Expectation

One of the best ways to get away from the ego is to stop thinking about ourselves for a moment and help someone else without expecting anything in return. Volunteer, adopt a pet, pick up trash in the environment, and so on! Part of the journey is realizing that we are connected – there is no ‘I’ in ‘TEAM’ and the same is true for the word ‘ONE’. Acknowledge the existence of others sharing the same space (Earth!) and know that what you do doesn’t only affect you!
