Today's Obsession with Material Things

What the world won’t tell you about “having it all”...
The unconscious consumer opens a portal to materialism—often followed by credit card debt, bad credit, and a mountain of emotional and financial overwhelm.
Sounds fun, right?
Coming from a place of Been There, Done That - and with a beloved grandmother who would lovingly be classified as a hoarder - I pose a deeper question:
What is it that makes us feel like we need everything… or want so much?
It's not just “people.”
It’s psychology.
It’s society.
It’s the system that normalized overconsumption.
We live in a world that markets lack.
Advertisements are designed to make you feel like you’re missing something. Whether it’s for self-worth or social relevance, they prey on a subtle but potent fear: the fear of being left out.
“You don’t have the new iPhone yet?
“You’re still driving that car?”
“Wait - you haven't heard of...?”
Maybe you were actually content with your current phone or car. Maybe you didn’t want to tack on another monthly bill. But that comment? That “harmless” question? It can trigger something internal and suddenly, you’re making a down payment you weren’t ready for, just to prove… what, exactly?

Let’s pause for a moment.
Because here’s what I’ve come to learn:
You don’t need things to be valuable, joyful, or whole.
You don’t need a bed to get a good night’s sleep.
You don’t need a luxury car to take a joy ride—just ride your bike with the wind in your hair.
You don’t need a sprawling home to start a garden—try a potted plant or an outdoor kit.
You don’t need every pair of Jordans to be fly, and you don’t need money to be generous.
We’ve seen what consumerism is doing to the Earth—our oceans, landfills, ecosystems. Imagine what graveyards would look like if everyone had to take their stuff with them.
Here’s the truth:
Wanting isn’t the problem.
Why we want, what we think it means, and how we respond when we can’t have it - that’s where the soul work begins.
Many of us are chasing, collecting, and accumulating not out of joy—but out of fear, wounds, and unresolved internal beliefs:
Memories of not having enough
Feelings of worthlessness or inadequacy
Fear of scarcity
A craving to be seen, accepted, or validated
These mindsets pull us out of gratitude. They disconnect us from faith. They distort our relationship with abundance. When you want from a place of lack, you’ll always feel like something is missing. When you live from a place of gratitude, you realize you already have more than enough.
You won’t need to chase because you’ll naturally attract. You won’t want for anything - because you’ll recognize the value of what already is. You’ll see your joy and worth as priceless… and unattached to anything money can buy.

Don’t get me wrong - I’m not saying it’s wrong to desire nice things. Desire can be sacred. But let’s check the root. Let’s be honest about what we’re really searching for when we scroll, swipe, and spend.
Because money doesn’t make you happy. What you associate it with does. It’s the vision, the freedom, the security, the contribution, the impact.
Want the new house? Great.
But don’t hate your apartment because you can’t see the upgrade yet.
Desire more abundance? Beautiful.
But don’t confuse stillness with stagnation. Spirit is always moving.
When you center yourself in Source, in purpose, in being - you won’t have to search for miracles.
They’ll find you.
So before you fall for the next shiny thing, ask yourself: “Do I really need this now, or am I trying to fill a space I haven't healed?”
You can absolutely have beautiful things. Just don’t lose yourself in them. The more we accumulate, the easier it becomes to identify with our possessions and the harder it becomes to let go.
Let’s rise above the noise.
The world is already overflowing with distractions. What we need now is clarity, peace, unity, and depth...
Not more of what they have. Not more of what they wear... More of what matters.
So instead of spending on things you won’t want a year from now:
🌀 Donate to someone in need.
🌀 Invest in something with soul.
🌀 Choose the worth of Self over the weight of stuff.

Just a little rant from someone who’s been on the Thing Train... and finally got off.
